Georgian Light Baluster Wine Glasses 1710 to 1760

The heavy baluster design gave way to the light baluster before the introduction of the glass tax. The lighter glass came to be known as the balustroid with a stem made up as a single knop or multiples, however these were much smaller in size than the heavy baluster with the size of the knop much reduced in size.

The Newcastle light baluster is a fabulous glass that is linked to Newcastle that has a very unusual stem formation that is described as being an inch or more longer than a normal stem with excellent craftsmanship of how the knops are executed with the most beautiful air beaded knops applied. The glasses are also know for the brilliant engraving which in some cases has been attributed to Holland where the glasses were supposedly sent and the Dutch engravers would then apply the most magnificent examples of ships and other emblems that would have been requested by the glass company on behalf of their clientele at the time.
